The Social Media Project A Positive Approach To Social Media Education

Over 70% of Teens have a Social Media account and 50% by the age of 12.
Our children are using Social Media. It is the way they socialise, communicate, and connect.

But who is teaching our kids how to use this powerful tool?

Who is showing them who to follow, what to post and when to share. Who is teaching them how to control the way they are seen

For if we are not teaching our kids how to use Social Media, then who is?

FAQ

Frequency Asked Questions

The Social Media Project is a positive education program focused on Social Media.  It was created to teach children how to use Social Media, (How to set up accounts, what to do, how to use it, what to share, when to post, who to follow) and how to be safe.

By educating kids on how to use Social Media properly our goal is to empower them with the knowledge to take control of their own digital presence. Control how they are seen, what they share and how to shape their own future.

The Social Media Project is also about creating partnerships between parents and their kids or teachers and their students. Opening conversations and allowing all children to have a space where they can share what they are doing and seeing online. Also, creating a safe space where vulnerable kids can come when they feel unsafe or bullied. As no child should feel isolated online or off-line.

The Social Media Project focuses on positive Social Media education. This is different to previous programs in that we educate kids on how to use Social. In the past, schools and other education providers have focused on blocking and banning when it comes to Social Media. This can encourage kids to go online and explore on their own, rebelling against parents and schools. When they explore on their own, they are then more likely to be influenced by their friends, exposed to inappropriate content or chatting with strangers online for guidance. The other effect of banning Social Media is that kids will then be reluctant to seek help if they are bullied as they are fearful of the consequences they may face and therefore the bulling goes unnoticed and unreported.

We want to change this, we want to teach kids how to use Social Media (who to follow, what to post and when to share) and open conversations between kids and their teachers.

Social media is a powerful tool which can open a lot of learning opportunities when used correctly. We want to help kids understand how to use this powerful tool. By educating kids about how to use Social Media and how it is beneficial we avoid these same kids being influenced by others.

For if we are not the ones teaching our children how to use Social Media, then who is??

The Social Media Project has programs for kids, teachers, schools and parents.

We run professional learning programs for teachers to teach them about Social Media education and how to implement Social Media programs in schools.

Talks and presentations to promote and educate both teachers, parents and students on impacts of Social Media. How positive Social Media can work, and why partnerships between parents and kids are very important keep them safe online.

And our online courses for kids (called our Social Media licenses). These are units of work focusing on different Social Media platforms. Allowing kids to go through and learn about how to set up accounts, how to make it safe, what to post, when to share, how to keep your information private, also who to follow, when to believe and when to question. We have multiple online courses, and each unit focuses on a different Social Media platform that kids are currently using.

Schools can sign up for all the different programs or select just the parts they want. If a school wants to, they can sign up for a school presentation, teacher professional learning and the Social Media licenses. Or any mix and match of the programs on offer. If you are not sure what to do drop us a line (admin@thesocailmediaproject.com.au) and we will be happy to chat with you.

Social media licenses are our Online learning courses for kids.  Each course covers a different Social media platform, (how to set up that platform how to stay safe at what post went to share how to comment and the key people to like). At the end of each unit students are awarded their Social Media License for that platform to show that they have both completed and understood what they have done.

In 2021 we will be launching the first stage of the Social Media Project. For full details (including costs and dates) please contact us at: admin@thesocialmediaproject.com
